Mordor's Cube

A small, unpowered cube in the tradition of the classics, full of nostalgic cards, balanced gameplay, and some surprisingly fresh picks. Sits about at a Modern+ level of power, despite several Legacy inclusions.

My philosophy is that a cube should have enough power to make its players cackle madly every draft in anticipation of busted engines and unforeseen synergies, but enough balance to make every deck a real contender.
The Vivaldi Update (MH1)
Jun 3 2019  11:43
Quality-of-life updates and the inclusion of a Gruul lands-matter theme.

- Testing: Endling, Archmage's Charm, Sarkhan, Spikeshot Elder.
- Gruul lands-matter; R and G archetype support by way of discard-matters.
- Cut underperformers and holdovers from previous updates.
- Wish list: another (cheap) B planeswalker.

The Williams Update (WAR)
May 15 2019  13:32
War of the Spark caused a lot of churn, in part because I wanted to test many new 'walkers, but also because the set made me re-align my cube to stick closer to my design principles (no unfair combos, no multi-format all-star value engines or stats monsters).

I'm also closing in on the "fossilization" of my cube, for budget and time reasons. I'm pretty sure we'll look back to regard WAR as a watershed in Magic's history, so I don't mind putting a hiatus on active design during that time frame. I'll continue to make card-by-card improvements (for example, once W gets a playable discard outlet, or once R gets another free sacrifice engine!), but I already own enough cards to "modularize" the design if I ever get bored, and I'm extremely content with the current product, so this is for the best.

On to changes:
- Made some quality upgrades (e.g. Pernicious Deed > Gaze of Granite).
- Cut Channel, Ajani Vengeant, and other multi-format best-in-class cards, in lieu of more synergistic options.
- Fairly semantical build-around switches (e.g. Toshiro Umezawa > Flesh Carver)
- Added many of the best WAR planeswalkers, focusing on augmenting Green and multicolored archetypes.
- Added a few more artifact payoffs, including Phyrexian Scriptures.
- Added a power-matters subtheme feat. Krenko, Marwyn, Dreadhorde Arcanist, with some top-notch pump spells to accompany.
- Finally added 1-CMC B discard spells, which have greatly improved the environment.
